eBay: The Auction Site That Pioneered Online Commerce

The Founding Story

eBay was founded in September 1995 by programmer Pierre Omidyar in San Jose, California. Originally part of his personal website and called "AuctionWeb," the platform let people list items for sale and let others bid on them in an auction format. A popular legend holds that one of the first items sold was a broken laser pointer, and when Omidyar contacted the buyer to make sure he understood it was broken, the buyer replied that he collected broken laser pointers.

The concept tapped into something powerful: a way to connect buyers and sellers of virtually anything, from collectibles to everyday goods, across the entire country and eventually the world. The site grew rapidly with almost no marketing, driven by the enthusiasm of its community.

Early Growth and Pivotal Moments

Omidyar brought in Meg Whitman as CEO in 1998, and under her leadership eBay professionalized and scaled dramatically. The company went public in 1998 in a highly successful IPO. eBay's model was capital-efficient because it did not hold inventory; it simply provided the marketplace and collected fees from sellers.

A crucial development was the rise of trusted transactions through user feedback and ratings, which helped strangers do business with confidence. eBay's acquisition of PayPal in 2002 gave it a dominant payment method that made buying and selling seamless.

Revenue and Business Milestones

eBay generated revenue from listing fees, final value fees on sales, and payment processing. It became one of the biggest success stories of the early internet, with billions of dollars in merchandise flowing through the platform. It expanded internationally and diversified into fixed-price "Buy It Now" listings alongside auctions.

The company later spun off PayPal in 2015, and in subsequent years sharpened its focus on its core marketplace. Its annual revenue reached into the billions of dollars, and it facilitated tens of billions in gross merchandise volume each year.

Current Scale and Impact

eBay operates in dozens of countries and connects well over a hundred million active buyers with sellers ranging from individuals clearing out their closets to large professional merchants. It became particularly known as a destination for collectibles, used goods, refurbished electronics, and hard-to-find items.

What Makes eBay Stand Out

eBay was a true pioneer that helped prove online commerce could work at all. By creating a trusted, self-sustaining marketplace connecting millions of independent buyers and sellers, it demonstrated the power of network effects and community in commerce, laying groundwork that later giants would build upon.
